Good morning. The muscle of a 91-year-old world record sprinter tests decades younger, a hypertrophy researcher explains the quality that goes before strength does, and new performance hires land in Philadelphia, Minnesota and Tempe. Let's get into it...

Andy Galpin recently broke down the full physiological workup researchers ran on a 91-year-old woman who holds the W90+ world record in the 200 meters. They rode her to exhaustion on a bike and took a biopsy from her quad. Her cardiorespiratory profile came back resembling women in their 50s, and her mitochondrial respiratory capacity was indistinguishable from a young adult's.
The fiber composition is the strange part. Aging normally shifts muscle toward slow-twitch. Hers was 57% fast-twitch, the proportion of a trained young athlete, and her slow fibers were unusually large and well supplied with capillaries.
Galpin posted the caveat along with it. It is one person. What it lines up with is the rest of the master athlete literature, where sprint training keeps turning up as the thing that protects the fibers that go first.
Arizona State announced the hiring of Tyler McCulloch as associate head coach for sports performance with men's basketball. He arrives from UTSA, where he spent two seasons with men's basketball and women's golf, and before that was senior associate strength and conditioning coach at San Francisco.
In a new Washington Post interview, hypertrophy researcher Brad Schoenfeld said muscular power fades earlier and faster than either strength or size, and that the decline starts in the 40s. It rarely gets separated out from strength, so most lifters never train it directly.
What he prescribes is a tempo change rather than a new exercise menu: lift the weight as fast as possible, lower it under control for two to three seconds, hold sets at 8 to 10 reps and cut the load to start. Schoenfeld said people 75 and older have made real gains on that inside eight to ten weeks.
"It's never too late to start training," Schoenfeld said.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced the hirings of Abe Edson, Chris Gratton and Lorne Goldenberg. Edson runs the group as head of athlete performance after two seasons as an assistant strength coach with the Minnesota Wild. Gratton was head strength coach of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms last season. Goldenberg has more than 40 years in pro hockey.
The Minnesota Wild also announced the hirings of Ben Klein and Bryan Rohrbach as assistant strength and conditioning coaches. Klein spent last year as a research and development performance analyst with the San Francisco 49ers. Rohrbach moves up from the Wild's AHL club in Iowa.
