Good morning. New research on how yesterday’s high-speed running turns up in tomorrow’s top speed, the case that coaches are the last of a dying breed, and why Florida built its offseason around hardship it can control. Let’s get into it...

New research tracked 26 Division I women’s soccer players across a full season, pairing GPS from every session with Oura ring data collected every night and a morning wellness survey. High-speed running predicted what happened the next day better than total distance in nearly every model they built.

The exchange rate is the number to keep. For every 100 meters of high-speed running an athlete covered above her own average, her max speed the next day fell by about 1 km/h. That same 100 meters cost her roughly eight minutes of sleep and a point of readiness. Total distance moved the needle too, but it took 1,000 meters above average to buy ten minutes of sleep and two percent of readiness.

Volume and intensity do not leave the same bill. A long easy session and a short sharp one can look close on a distance report and land very differently on tomorrow’s top speed. The number that predicts tomorrow is sitting in the high-speed column, not the total.

Steve Magness published 27 lessons on coaching this week. "In a world filled with specialists, coaches are among the last of the master generalists," he writes, then lists the hats the job requires: teacher, counselor, therapist, biomechanist, physiologist, trainer.

One of the 27 points gets specific. Athletes give two kinds of feedback and they do not always agree. Deliberate feedback is what the athlete chooses to project, that he feels great and wants another rep. Automatic feedback is what he cannot control - posture, body language, mechanics starting to slip.

What Magness watches is the change from that athlete’s own norm. "It is when the athlete deviates from their norm that we should raise a red flag," he writes. A sudden shift in personality can be an early sign of overtraining. A different posture in the warm-up can be a recovery signal on its own.

Florida is coming off four losing seasons in five years, and first-year head coach Jon Sumrall handed the offseason to Rusty Whitt, a former Green Beret on his third school with Sumrall after Troy and Tulane. The brief was specific. "I can only create so many adverse situations out of the practice field, but we try to create as many as we can," Sumrall said.

The Gauntlet was the vehicle, a series of strength and conditioning drills that pit players against each other, and every player had to pass it before spring practice could start. Quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. credited the standard over the drills. "I give a lot of credit to Coach Whitt because of just the discipline and the standard he holds to us," Jones said. "He always stayed on us, and I think it just made our toughness through the roof."

Sumrall is not calling it finished. "It’s improved," Sumrall said. "We haven’t arrived. We’re going to have some hardship here at some point this season. We’ll find out what our toughness really looks like then."
