In a recent Athletic piece, Trinity College head strength coach Bill DeLongis convened coaches from the NHL, PWHL, and college hockey for Strength on Ice, a virtual summit that produced 11.5 hours of training material. A few highlights coaches shared:

The details:

  • Blue Jackets coach Anthony Donskov trains explosive hip abduction and adduction with "skater jacks" - jumping-jack landings that finish with feet back under the hips

  • Bruins coach Tim Lebbossiere runs a 4-2-1 pregame nutrition formula: full meal four hours out, carb snack at two, sports drink or gel at one

  • GVN Performance's Jackson Frey sets a minimum bodyweight target at height in inches x 2.5, then tests squat force on force plates before progressing

  • Victoire coach Vicki Bendus has players put lavender oil on their pillows to kick-start postgame recovery

At the Canucks' development camp in Abbotsford, coaches and players raved about mental performance coach Alex Hodgins - an Olympic veteran who's worked with Christine Sinclair, the Whitecaps, and Canada's national women's soccer team.

His message to prospects: long-term consistency beats short bursts of intensity (he uses Amundsen's South Pole win to prove it), and you step into discomfort like a buffalo charging the storm rather than running from it. Goalie prospect Alexei Medvedev credited last summer's mindset work with powering him through a tough OHL season.

Tennessee released updated player weights Friday, and nearly every returner moved. Via Rocky Top Insider, DL Christian Gass led the way at +28 (217 to 245), QB George MacIntyre hit 208 - closing in on his stated 210-pound fall camp target - and DL Isaiah Inge posted the biggest cut at -12. Most added muscle; some trimmed.
