🏟️ Tommy Moffitt Was Told He'd Never Coach in the SEC Again
After Brian Kelly let Tommy Moffitt go at LSU, an agent told him straight: "Coach, I think you're past your prime. I don't see you ever getting another job like this one." The best he'd do, the agent said, was an FCS job or maybe something in the Group of Five. Moffitt's response: "That motivated me more than anything." Rather than stepping back, he zeroed in on Texas A&M - calling so persistently that the staff eventually had to pass word through a mutual contact to pump the brakes until Elko had a free moment. When that call came, it became one of the defining hires of Elko's tenure.
Now in his third offseason in College Station, head coach Mike Elko has been direct: "A lot has been made about the culture shift that has happened here, and I just think so much of that is what Tommy has done in the weight room." Read More
🏀 Marcus Brock Named LSU Basketball's Head S&C Coach
LSU men's basketball has hired Marcus Brock as Head Basketball Strength and Conditioning Coach. Brock spent the past three seasons as head S&C coach at Missouri State, where he designed individualized and team-based programs across preseason, in-season, and offseason schedules. He previously served as assistant S&C coach at Texas in 2022-23 and at Baylor in 2022, with additional experience at Florida Atlantic.
Brock holds NSCA-CSCS/CPT certification and a kinesiology degree from UIW. Head coach Will Wade: "His ability to design specialized programs for players that involve both the strength component and range of movement patterns will be beneficial to us moving forward." Read More
🏒 Why Young Players Are Arriving Better Prepared Than Ever
Former NHL coach Drew Bannister wrote a piece for NHL.com breaking down why so many young players are making major contributions in this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs.
His take: it starts with training. "What you've seen over the last 10 years is just the switch in the athletes' attitude toward their training," Bannister wrote - pointing to strength and conditioning, diet, and mental skills becoming more available and more embraced at a younger age. The one-sport athlete now arrives in the pros with daily access to S&C coaches, dieticians, and mental skills coaches that didn't exist the same way a generation ago. Read More
🏈 Sean McVay Opens Up About the Moment He Almost Quit Coaching
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay revealed on Bussin' With The Boys that he nearly walked away from coaching after the Rams' disastrous 5-12 season in 2022. "I almost quit coaching," McVay said, admitting he was counting down the days until the season ended and calling himself "a fraud" for struggling to push through. The turning point came from his wife Veronika, who told him: "That never really sounded like the kind of leader you wanted to be." McVay said it hit him like a ton of bricks. He's since signed a contract extension and says the idea of leaving coaching now "feels so laughable." Read More
