🏋️‍♀️ Chains vs. Elastic Bands in the Back Squat - New Research Has Some Answers

A new study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research compared back squats performed with free weights only, with chains attached, and with elastic bands attached.

The findings: chains are more effective than elastic bands for enhancing power output. Elastic bands, on the other hand, can reduce spinal loading - useful for athletes at risk of lumbar spine injuries while still providing sufficient lower body resistance. Getting to 30% risk reduction required roughly 560-610 min/week - about 3-4 times the current minimum recommendation. The study's takeaway: there's a meaningful difference between the activity volume needed for basic protection and the volume needed for meaningful cardiovascular resilience. Read More
