Good morning. Florida's performance director reads out his summer numbers, a NASCAR team explains why it recruits college athletes onto its pit crew, and the Army puts $350 million into fitness facilities. Let's get into it...

Florida director of football performance Rusty Whitt opened fall camp week by reading out his summer at the lectern, nutritionist Jake Sankal beside him. Seventy-nine Gators set personal records in top speed. Receiver Eric Singleton Jr. went from 22.74 miles per hour to 23.32, and quarterback Tramell Jones from 19.92 to 21.71. Team-wide, 54 players power clean over 300 pounds and 56 run over 20.
The body composition is where the offensive line shows up. Bryce Lovett lost 43 pounds of fat and added 22 of muscle, down to 305 from 321. Head coach Jon Sumrall walked into the indoor a couple of weeks ago and found him doing drills alone with his shirt off. "Bryce Lovett seven months ago wouldn't have taken his shirt off," Sumrall said. Tight end Heze Kent went from 313 to 288, which Whitt got by having him walk 30 to 45 minutes a day in a 30-pound weighted vest.
He told 247Sports they keep lifting through camp. No weights the first four days - hydration, mobility and activation circuits instead, because the helmets go back on - then 50-minute sessions, low volume and high intensity, twos and threes. "I don't like to maintain," Whitt said. "I like to improve."
Writing on Science of Multidirectional Speed, Tom Dos'Santos argues that two variables set the intensity of any cut - the angle and the entry speed - and that coaches should treat them as dials rather than fixed features of a drill. He sorts angles into three zones.
The zones:
Green, 0 to 45 degrees: minimal braking, the job is holding velocity, and it runs on concentric and fast stretch-shortening cycle qualities
Amber, 45 to 60 degrees: moderate braking, and the penultimate foot contact starts doing real work
Red, 60 to 180 degrees: heavy braking to kill horizontal momentum, longer ground contacts, and the demand shifts toward eccentric strength and slow SSC
Sharper is also more expensive - 90-degree cuts load the knee more than 45s. One wrinkle: on 180-degree turns athletes often brake across both feet, spreading the load in a way a single-leg side-step can't.

Hendrick Motorsports athletic director Evan Kureczka told UNC Charlotte the pit crew is one of the most physically demanding jobs in professional sport, and the team staffs it accordingly - it recruits college and professional athletes and runs a combine every year. The fueler handles a can weighing roughly 100 pounds and the tire carrier sprints with two 55-pound tires, all inside nine seconds in a fire suit on hot asphalt.
The brief is to shave every millisecond off each action in a stop by building a more efficient athlete. Head strength coach Mark Morrison brought Kureczka in to get athletic training knowledge into the weight room and tailor the work by position. What he treats is mostly chronic overuse - backs and forearms, from repeating identical movements most of the year.
The Pentagon awarded BeaverFit North America a $350 million contract to design and build training facilities and equipment for the Army, with seven years to deliver. It runs through the Army's Holistic Health and Fitness program, which puts Soldier Performance Readiness Centers on bases - 43,189 square feet apiece, with ceilings of at least 16 feet. The contract covers health and fitness structures, human performance structures, and the equipment and systems inside them.
Colorado School of Mines announced the hiring of Griffin Vander Waerdt as director of sports performance. He arrives from Arkansas-Monticello, where he ran football strength and conditioning. Before that he spent four years on Colorado State's staff, rising from intern to assistant director of strength and conditioning for football, with a focus on body composition programming. He played defensive back at CSU before a medical retirement moved him into the weight room.
