Good morning. Why one performance coach runs a fitness test inside his warm up, a meta-analysis finds complex training does the most for agility, and why Arsenal rehearses travel chaos on purpose. Let's get into it...

📊 Hoffenheim Buried a Fitness Test in Its Warm-Up

📸 TSG Hoffenheim
In a new Sportsmith interview, Hoffenheim fitness coach Philipp Lussi explains why his staff buried a fitness test inside the warm-up. The one threshold test they ran each preseason gave them a single snapshot, and testing the whole squad more often would have cost training time. The warm-up already had a running portion in it. That run is now the test.
Players run a figure-8 around poles set every 50m at 12 km/h, with a whistle every 15 seconds to hold the pace. Three minutes of running, two minutes of rest. The staff pull the data off the heart rate straps after the session. The number that matters is HRex, the average heart rate over the final 60 seconds as a percentage of each player’s max. A change of 4 to 5% means fitness actually moved. Anything smaller is noise.
When a player’s HRex climbs for two or three weeks straight, Lussi adds 60 to 90 minutes on the bike to keep the work off the legs. One rule he is firm about: no balls on the pitch during the test. Players drift toward them, and dribbling raises the heart rate.

📸 Power Lift
A new meta-analysis in the International Journal of Sports Medicine pooled 75 randomized trials and found complex training beat straight strength work on everything it measured: countermovement jump, squat jump, agility and sprint.
The margins were not equal. Agility gained the most by a distance, then squat jump, with sprint and countermovement jump behind them. These were athletes already training three or more times a week, on programs running at least four weeks, so this is not a beginner effect. The gains ran larger in younger athletes and in sports built on technical or composite skills.

📖 Arsenal Rehearses Chaos in Pre-Season

Arsenal’s flight to Naples was held up by air traffic control last week. The squad sat at the training ground, landed in Italy late at night, lost its mandatory media session and won 1-0 the next day. Manager Mikel Arteta said none of that was new to his players, because he builds it into pre-season on purpose. Arrive at the stadium very late. Change the transport and the route. Push the meals back. Make the dressing room hotter and harder, with fewer massage beds.
"I love those challenges and I try to create them in pre-season, so when they happen, we’ve already experienced them," Arteta said.
Twenty athletes with patellar tendinopathy ran the same eight-week rehab. Nine took creatine after every eccentric session, eleven took sugar, and nobody involved knew which was which. Both groups finished in the same place: pain scores climbed about the same, tendon thickness came down about the same and knee extension strength improved about the same.
What separated them was when. The creatine group hit a significant drop in pain at the four-week mark and the placebo group did not, and only the creatine group’s jump height climbed, from 34.3 cm to 36.8 cm by week four. The between-group test came in at p = 0.099, so treat this as a signal rather than a settled result. The rehab is what did the work here. Creatine may have got them there sooner.
