Good morning. A D3 program lets bar speed set the Monday squat, the Giants want their strength staff to push harder, and a ref found Wisconsin’s S&C director on the sideline. Let’s get into it...

A player who squats 405 pounds on a Friday might not be ready for the same load on Monday after taking more than 90 snaps in a game. That’s the thinking behind the velocity-based training UW-Whitewater football added this season, using technology to measure how fast athletes move the barbell.
It’s run by assistant sports performance coach Corey Meredith, who spent 11 years at Kansas State helping build training systems that used velocity-based technology to guide workouts, then three seasons at UCF. The Warhawks also added Monday running and shoulder pads at Thursday practices. Head coach Jace Rindahl said that while other programs are pulling back, they’ve done the opposite.
“We are training to become faster and more explosive; we are not just lifting to lift,” Meredith said.

⚾️ The Giants Told Their Strength Staff to Push to the Brink

Coming off a 97-loss season, Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey told The Athletic that one of his two pitching initiatives is pushing the strength and training side harder to get more stuff out of the club’s prospects.
He’s told the strength and conditioning and medical staffs there will be no blowback from him if somebody gets hurt in the pushing. He would rather accept a setback than have a player who isn’t getting the most out of his velocity, sprint speed or bat speed. “We’ve got to push it to the brink with these guys in their training,” Posey said.
Bryan King has spent 23 years in strength and conditioning, and this fall he’s in his first World Series as the Tampa Bay Rays’ head strength and conditioning coach. The Bethany, Oklahoma, native played at Connors State and Arkansas, then spent his senior season at Oklahoma before moving into S&C when his playing days ended.
His approach after a tough night: “You kind of put your head down and go to work the next day,” he told KOCO.

🏈 Wisconsin’s Strength Coach Drew a 15-Yard Flag
Late in the first quarter of Wisconsin’s 24-7 upset of No. 16 USC, with the play already whistled dead, an official ran down the sideline and made contact with Brady Collins, Wisconsin’s director of strength and conditioning, near the restricted white boundary. Then he threw the flag.
The sideline interference penalty turned a USC third-and-long into a first down and kept alive the Trojans’ only touchdown drive. “Ref sought out contact. Insane,” Barstool’s Dan Katz wrote.
