🏗️ Inside Georgia Tech's $90M Performance Center - What It's Actually Built to Do

📸 Power Lift

Sports Business Journal went inside the Thomas A. Fanning Student-Athlete Performance Center to break down what the $90M, 108,000 square foot facility is actually built to do. Fully funded philanthropically, it includes Georgia Tech's first sports science lab, an upgraded strength and conditioning complex equipped with Power Lift equipment, expanded sports medicine facilities, and nutrition and dining space.

The tech integration is the headline. Georgia Tech partnered with Emory Healthcare and the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance, modeled after the Atlanta Falcons' SPARC facility, to map muscle activity, joint forces, and asymmetries for injury reduction and performance enhancement. 💰 FSU Found a New Way to Fund Athletics - Without Cutting Sports

While other programs are cutting Olympic sports and turning to private equity to cover rising costs, Florida State is trying something different. Through a new agreement with Nocap Sports, FSU formed the Seminole Business Network - a model where boosters and alumni who own businesses switch to a network of preferred vendors. When those businesses transact with network partners, a portion flows back to FSU athletics.

The first deal alone - a booster-owned car dealership switching payment processors - generated $125,000 for FSU in one year and saved the dealership $700,000 in processing fees. "What we've done is kind of flip the whole model on its head," Nocap CEO Nicholas Lord said. Villanova, South Carolina, Pittsburgh, and Xavier are already in the network. Read More

💊 What the Research Actually Says About Ashwagandha

A new narrative review published in Nutrition & Health summarized the current evidence on ashwagandha supplementation for athletic performance and recovery. Key findings: doses of 330-1000 mg daily have been shown to increase endurance and enhance post-exercise recovery. Twice daily supplementation of 300 mg combined with weight training has been linked to increased muscle strength and hypertrophy.

The proposed primary mechanism is cortisol regulation, with secondary effects on anxiety and sleep quality. Active individuals and athletes may need higher doses around 600 mg/day. Side effects are mild at recommended doses. Protocols across studies vary significantly so firm conclusions are hard to draw - probably not a game-changer for most athletes, but worth trialling individually. Read More
