Good morning. Michigan earns a first-of-its-kind NSCA honor, the strength qualities that matter most for sprint speed, and the case for coaching by error correction. Let's get into it…

Michigan's strength and conditioning program is the first to earn the NSCA's new Collegiate Program of Distinction, a recognition built on program standards rather than wins - certified staff, safe coach-to-athlete supervision ratios, mentorship and internship structures, continuing education, and facility management.
A new European Journal of Sport Science study is the first to model all five strength qualities - heavy dynamic, fast dynamic, reactive, isometric, and explosive - against sprint performance at once, testing 84 resistance-trained athletes over 40 meters.
The findings:
Fast dynamic strength (CMJ jump height) was the single biggest predictor of sprint speed from 10-40 m and top velocity
Heavy dynamic (3RM back squat) was the second-strongest contributor across distances
Reactive strength (drop jump RSI) mattered most at maximal velocity
Isometric and explosive measures added almost no unique value once the others were in the model
A simple three-test combo - CMJ height, 3RM squat, drop jump RSI - explained up to 75% of sprint variance
The authors' takeaway: when time is tight, prioritize fast dynamic, then heavy dynamic, then reactive strength for testing and training.
A new IUSCA position stand makes a simple argument: the best S&C coaches aren't the ones with a perfect system, but the ones who get better at spotting and fixing their own mistakes. Since no one has complete knowledge and every athlete and setting differs, progress comes from asking sharper questions - what's actually limiting this athlete, why something works in one context but not another, what to change, keep, or cut.
The takeaway: treat practice as problems to solve, and measure your growth by how well you correct error over time, not just what the testing numbers say.
