🏈 Tennessee Drops the Weight Room Numbers from Owings' First 14 Weeks
Derek Owings has been at Tennessee since January, and this week the Vols posted what he's done with the roster. In 14 weeks: 867.3 pounds of muscle added, 218.1 pounds of fat lost, 33 players gained 11-plus pounds of muscle. Owings came over from Indiana, the reigning national champions, and is reportedly on a $1.2 million deal — the highest salary ever for a college football strength coach. Read More
🥩 Endurance Athletes May Need More Protein on Recovery Days Than Training Days
Sport scientist Jonah Rosner broke down a 2025 Sports Medicine review suggesting endurance athletes may actually need more protein on recovery days than training days. The targets for endurance-trained men: around 1.8 g/kg on a normal training day, more than 2.0 g/kg on a recovery day.
Why? Training damages muscle fibers, repair keeps going for 24-plus hours after the session, and the body burns protein as fuel during the work itself. The bill gets paid after the workout, not during it. Most endurance athletes are currently taking in around 1.5 g/kg. Rosner flags the findings as emerging.Read More
🎓 Coaches Earn Their MSCC at CSCCa National Conference
The CSCCa national conference wrapped up in Fort Worth yesterday. Tuesday night, coaches were presented with the Master Strength and Conditioning Coach designation — among them: Jimmy Edel (Wyoming, basketball/volleyball), Logan Ogden (Iowa, men's basketball), Mary Beth George (Youngstown State), Joe Miday (Kentucky football), and Lee Scott (Kansas State, men's basketball). The MSCC requires a minimum of 12 years full-time at the collegiate or professional level, plus an active SCCC. There are 380 total MSCC holders.
