🐊 Rusty Whitt Brings "The Gauntlet" to Florida

Rusty Whitt, Florida’s new director of football performance, is installing The Gauntlet—the same early-morning toughness program he previously ran at Tulane and Troy (which we touched on last week as Colin Kenyon continues to run it at Tulane).

The entire team repeats the challenge if a single mental error occurs. Whitt noted that only four teams have ever completed it under his watch (two at Troy, two at Tulane). After four attempts, Florida hasn’t finished it yet—but is closing the gap. A military veteran with 25+ years of coaching experience, Whitt emphasized accountability and standards: "Weak things break," and "I take a lot of pride in our offensive line and defensive lines... if they're getting beat up, it's my fault." 🏋️‍♀️ Understanding Concentric, Eccentric, and Isometric Training

Strength coach Kosta Telegadas published a breakdown of how contraction type drives adaptation. Eccentric training produces higher force capacity (**20-40% greater** than concentric), stimulates unique muscle remodeling, and improves braking ability—but requires longer recovery.

Concentric-focused work drives rate of force development and is easier to recover from, making it ideal for in-season phases. Isometric training improves position-specific strength and is highly tolerable during high-load periods. Telegadas argues that manipulating tempo is one of the simplest ways to shift training emphasis without changing exercises or equipment. Read More

👴 Heavy Lifting Works for 70+ Year Olds

Dr. Andy Galpin shared a new study showing that 70-83 year olds responded well to basic strength progression. After 16 weeks of leg press, leg extension, and leg curls 3x per week, participants saw major increases: 19% MVC strength, 58% rate of force development, 3% quad cross-sectional area, and 14% type II fiber area.

A whopping 82% were classified as "Robust" or "Excellent" responders, with only 5% classified as "Poor." The program progressed from 3x12 at 15RM to 4x4 at 6-8RM. Galpin's takeaway: basic exercise progression principles work just fine for older adults. Read More

🏟️ NFL Players Rank Their Weight Rooms

Cooper Mitchell shared the annual NFL player weight room rankings—and the Super Bowl LX contenders ranked near opposite ends. The Seattle Seahawks earned a B grade (17th), while the New England Patriots received an F grade (32nd). The rankings are player-voted and reflect facility quality, equipment, and overall training environment. Read More
