🦘 Jump Training 101: Building Explosive Athletes
Pat Basil breaks down jump training as one of the simplest ways to develop explosive athletes. Jumps improve Rate of Force Development (RFD)—how fast you can apply force—which separates elite athletes from average ones.
Unlike barbell lifts, jumps let athletes produce force in multiple directions: vertical, horizontal, lateral, and multi-directional. Do jumps early in the workout when fresh, or pair them with strength movements like squats. Frequency: 2-3x per week with a 50-60 total jump weekly cap. Beginners start with 10-15 reps per session, advanced athletes can do 15-25 reps. Early offseason focuses on variety (vertical, horizontal, single-leg, lateral), while closer to competition shifts to higher output and more elastic variations. Simple progression: start with variations the athlete can execute well, then gradually increase demand every few weeks. Read More
