Good morning. A strength coach challenges the field to rethink what "strength" actually means in team sports, researchers find that knee-flexion angle significantly impacts hamstring testing, and Lindsey Vonn is back training just days after tearing her ACL. Let's get into it...

💪 What Do We Actually Mean by "Strength" in S&C?
Dr. Justin Lima published a perspective piece arguing that strength coaches need to expand their definition of strength beyond barbell lifts. Drawing from Chris Doyle's philosophy at Iowa, Lima defines strength as "maintaining posture under load"—whether that's a heavy squat, fighting for a rebound, or owning space on a basketball court.
He references Verkhoshansky's Dynamic Correspondence and Bondarchuk's exercise classification pyramid, arguing that movements like sled pushes, ViPR rotations, and lateral lunges can be strength work when properly loaded and integrated. The piece challenges the "SBD-only" mindset while emphasizing that barbell lifts remain essential general preparation for team sport athletes. Read More
🦵 Knee-Flexion Angle Alters Hamstring Force Output by 50N
A study in Science and Medicine in Football examined how knee-flexion angle impacts isometric hamstring strength testing using the NordBord. Researchers tested 43 soccer players in two positions: ISO 30 (30° knee flexion) and ISO Prone (90° flexion). Results showed that ISO 30 produced ~50N higher peak force per limb compared to ISO Prone, despite moderate correlations between tests.
Muscle activation was identical across positions, suggesting the force difference stems from biomechanical factors like length-tension relationships, not neural recruitment. The findings reinforce that knee angle matters and test positions shouldn't be used interchangeably. Read More
