🧠 Your Brain Decides When You're Fatigued, Not Your Legs

Steve Magness breaks down how fatigue isn't just a muscular issue—it's your brain making the ultimate decision on how hard you can push. In a recent study, runners who swished and spit out a carb drink ran 2% faster. Those who consumed a dissolvable carb strip ran 3% faster. Little to no carbs were actually ingested—the brain was fooled by mouth sensors signaling fuel is on the way.

The brain constantly runs a cost-benefit analysis, updating based on fuel signals. This is why caffeine works and why breaking races into smaller chunks helps. We treat performance like a hardware problem (VO2max, lactate threshold), but your brain is regulating the whole system. Read More

⚾️ Mookie Betts Adopted Yamamoto's S&C Routine

Mookie Betts entered the 2026 season with a renewed focus on physical preparation after losing more than 20 pounds during a stomach illness last season. Among his new steps, Betts incorporated aspects of Yoshinobu Yamamoto's unique workout routine.

He adopted a stretching routine designed by Yamamoto's strength and conditioning coach, Yada Sensei, and throws the same javelins as Yamamoto daily. Betts: "I think throwing the javelins is why I can make a play like that in the hole and throw it on a line. I'm really grateful for Yoshi and Sensei because they definitely changed my perspective, changed my life, my game." In addition to taking care of his body, Betts also recalibrated his swing over the offseason. The combination of physical health and refocused mechanics has him looking much better this spring: .286/.348/.476 with a double and a home run in 21 at-bats. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believes Betts will be in the MVP conversation this year. Read More

🦵 Don’t Skip Calves

Siim Land shared a study showing calf circumference predicts mortality risk in older adults. Low calf circumference (below 35 cm) independently predicts higher mortality risk, while high calf circumference (above 38.5 cm) is associated with reduced mortality. Calf circumference is used as a practical proxy for skeletal muscle mass. The takeaway: don't skip leg day. Read More
